Pennsylvania Law Understanding
I just read up on PA's carry laws and I wanted to know if my understanding of the laws was correct. So when you are 18 you can buy any gun you want that does not require military or police licensing and carry it openly wherever you want except building owned by the government and schools k-12. Now for concealed carry you need to apply for the license and you must be 21 years old. I got a bit confused on the more specific things such as I thought I read that to carry in philadelphia you need an additional permit even if it is open carry? Any clarifications to better help me understand would be greatly appreciated. Also any helpful information you guys have for me would me wonderful.

RE: Pennsylvania Law Understanding
you cannot buy a handgun at 18 years old. you may, however, own one, and carry one openly, except in Philadelphia, where a LTCF is necessary to carry openly or concealed. no further permits or licensing is necessary in Philadelphia, although i'm sure they'd like it to be.

RE: Pennsylvania Law Understanding
so to my understanding, you can own a handgun at 18 if someone else buys it for you? and until your 21 you can only buy longarms? and you can openly carry any gun that isnt a handgun in the city of philly without a permit?

RE: Pennsylvania Law Understanding
It can't be just anyone (like a neighbor or friend) who buys it for you because then there would need to be a transfer completed at an FFL.
Handguns may be gifted from parent to child, spouse to spouse, and a few others that escape me at the moment. |

RE: Pennsylvania Law Understanding
An 18 yr old can buy a handgun, just not from a FFL (gun dealer). They can buy one from a private party but, as said, the transfer would have to be done by the county sheriff and although they are supposed to do it (by law) most will not unless really pushed.
