South Korea to sell 108,000 Garand Rifles to US Gun Collectors
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 10:01 am

SEOUL, Korea –-(AmmoLand.com)- South Korea’s defense ministry said Wednesday it plans to raise tens of millions of dollars by selling more than 100,000 aging US-supplied rifles to gun enthusiasts in the United States.
Washington has approved South Korea’s plan to sell about 86,000 M1 Garand rifles and 22,000 M1 carbine rifles, together valued at 108 million dollars, the ministry said.
The rifles used during the Korean and Vietnam wars have been kept at military warehouses, it said.
“The US government recently approved our plan to sell old M1 and carbine rifles, which were given to our soldiers as part of a US aid program,” a ministry spokesman told AFP.
The rifles are occasionally used by reserve forces for drills, he said without giving details.
The military will dispose of all its M1s but will keep about 640,000 carbines for reserve forces, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper said.
“Importers are very interested in them as many Americans want to buy them as curios for their collections,” an unidentified military official was quoted as saying.
M1s were made first in 1926 and used in World War II and the Vietnam War. The carbines were first produced in 1941 and used during the 1950-1953 Korean War.
South Korea provided the second-largest contingent of foreign troops in South Vietnam after its close ally, the United States.

Do you think the prices will go down once the maket gets flooded with these rifles?
Oh...my...goodness. All of those mint and near-mint rifles being made available to US gun owners. What a sweet thought. It makes me want to buy a Korean car in appreciation.

Sadly, the South Korean government loves and respects US gun owners than the current US president...
I may just see a garand in my future..
Ok i'll take 107,000 of them.
What a rip- off! ,These rifles were given to the Koreans with tax payers money. Now they want to sell them back to us at a profit.

I see your point, but what alternative do you propose? Just give them to a lucky 108,000 americans? I suppose they could sell them and give the profits to the US, but I don't see that happening and unfortunately if they gave them back to the US military, they would likely be destroyed before being sold to the people. At least this way we have a crack at them.

Another way to look at it is we gave them aid, they're now converting their gun aid into money aid. Just think, maybe this will be $108M less the US will give them. Wink

One concern I have with the wording of this article is that they were referred to as "curios". Does that mean they are going to be made inoperable?

I realize this was originally posted last year, what ever happened? Were they imported? I'm not in the M1 clique.
I understand that the NObama administration will not let them back into the country. I am going to Korea in May of this year, is there any way I can buy one over there and bring it back with me?

Apparently these ones weren't "given", they were sold, which is where the problem lies.

If they were the ones given out, they'd be returned and shuffled off to the CMP. Instead, they were sold, so they'd have to go through importation just like any other firearm.

Not entirely true. Hillary is standing at the U.S. door with her arms wide. However, she left the melting pot on. She will let them in, just to throw them into the furnace IMMEDIATELY afterward. She is drooling over the chance to destroy over 100,000 rifles.
